Knowledge Management and Information Management (KMIM) Concentration

Graduates of the University of Toronto's iSchool are highly sought after by both corporate and governmental employers. Within a year of graduation, 89 percent of alumni are employed, and 92 percent of those are employed in related full-time positions. The ability to organize and manage information is essential to organizations large and small, so graduates of this IA school find that their skill set is very valuable in the job market.

Students in the Knowledge Management and Information Management Concentration within the Information School learn how to create tools that make it easy for people to access and use the large quantity of information that they have. Graduate students learn both the theoretical frameworks of information management and how to design those systems through hands-on practice.

Those pursuing the KMIM Concentration take seven mandatory courses over the period of two years. These courses are Information Systems, Services and Design; Managing Organizational Records I; Information Management in Organizations – Models and Platforms; Management of Information Organizations; Metadata, Schemas and Applications; and two information workshops.

KMIM students can then choose from many elective courses to tailor their education to their academic and professional goals. There are even a few specific courses offered in health informatics for students who would like to pursue a career managing healthcare data. This is a quickly growing field where students can learn how to leverage information to improve healthcare outcomes.

This IA degree program has numerous options and students can choose up to two concentrations as part of their Master of Information - KMIM is just one of these. Each concentration has a different set of required core classes and recommended electives. Students also have the option of adding a thesis. This system allows students to create the academic pathway that best fits their career goals while ensuring that every MI student develops an understanding of the fundamental concepts of information management.

The KMIM Concentration is a subset of the Master of Information program. This IA program offers unique co-op options, where students can obtain full-time paid employment and count that toward their academic experience. This allows students to gain deeper real-world knowledge in their field while still in school, build professional connections, and learn how information management works in a professional setting.

The MI program is accredited by the American Library Association. The IA program begins each year in September, and applications for the following year open on October 1. The early admission deadline is January 31, and the regular deadline is March 31. Applications are considered on a rolling basis. The application can be completed entirely online, and the application fee is $125. Admissions status can be checked on the application website at any time, and decisions are communicated as soon as they are made.

The University of Toronto was founded as King's College in 1827. In 1850, it became a secular university and changed its name. There are more than 60,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the university, which comprises twelve colleges. The university has campuses in Scarborough and Mississauga in addition to Toronto.
